Bull Fight

I think I have mentioned before how touchy our before school routine is. Getting through the necessary steps and out the door with a positive outlook for both mother and child is tricky at best. I should know better than to mess with the equilibrium.

Weddings (and other such events)

Tomorrow my brother is getting married. In a quiet, small gathering. On a boat. At Disney World.   Now, while most people think this sounds romantic and lovely, I am a nervous wreck. My brother loves my son no matter what; however, if he decides to melt down or scream or narrate the entire event,…

Anne Moore Burnett’s “Step Ahead of Autism” Reviewed

“Autism is not a puzzle but an opportunity to step up to the challenge and be the best parent you can be.”                                            - Anne Moore Burnett How many of us have thought about staying…

My Three Cents

I didn’t feel like I was doing anything that extraordinary. I was doing what any good mom would do – trying my hardest to meet my children’s needs. There’s nothing here to pity or stand in awe of. It’s my child who is doing amazing things.

Counting the Grapes

Well, when you’re child pulls your hair, kicks, screams, and starts throwing things because things aren’t just the way they want them; when you have no idea what’s going on with your child and they don’t have the words to tell you; when you generally feel out of control and have learned a few things that seem to help a little here and there…you do strange things like count the grapes. Too Much to Ask?

I had a meeting today with various members of our support team at school. I was trying to understand more about what is going on with the child’s writing, and basically learned nothing. “She’s doing fine. Yes, we acknowledge the struggle that writing, and indeed any expression of language is for her, but she’s meeting…

Bite-Sized Homework

We’ve had our ups and downs with homework this year. Most weeks the child’s homework is a sweet routine of math drills and spelling practice. Since she thrives on routine more than even she would care to admit, this has been overall very good. Most days she can do her homework with minimal mom input,…

It’s POTTY TIME!!!!

A few years ago, I fell in love with Signing Time. Jack was struggling to do much more than scream and I was increasingly frustrated. In a last ditch effort, I bought some DVDs and prayed that he would communicate with me. Slowly, he began to sign (things like more and done) and I felt…

Daffodils at Night

I made a tour of every store I could think of that might have potted daffodils. The kind you buy as a hostess gift for Easter brunch…or whatever…but this was even a little late for that. Two nurseries, the drug store, and three grocery stores later I finally found a little pot of miniature daffodils. I wasn’t sure they were quite what she was after.

Message for ALL Mom’s.. LOVE your kids, as if they were dying..

My day had started like any other, I was up at 5 packing lunches and backpacks, while trying to gulp down some coffee. I had an appointment at the office later, so I spent a few minutes standing in front of my closet perplexed and sighing. I looked in the mirror, briefly noting the major…
