Against Medical Advice: Book Review and Giveaway

Our book reviews and giveaways are usually the Jennifer’s domain. You know, being a published author and all.

(BTW, have you read Roadmap to Holland?)

But when this opportunity was offered, I accepted in a flash. I just knew I needed to read this book.

Against Medical Advice by James Patterson and James Friedman tells the true story of one family’s struggle with an agonizing medical mystery.

For most of us, our bodies are a miracle. Being locked within Cory Friedman’s body was a living hell. Trapped inside a brain with a nightmarish mind of its own, Cory’s life is almost destroyed by an devastating nightmare medical symptoms.

Tourette’s syndrome is presented through Cory’s own harrowing and heartbreaking reality.

But what has stayed with me weeks after reading this book is not only Cory’s courage through this experience, but the courage and love of his family.

The power of one family’s unconditional love for one another made me stop and take stock of our family’s experience with Parker and all that he has gone through.

It made me realize that nothing is more important than our family.

It renewed my commitment to the power that comes from the love found within the walls of our home.

This book is empowering. It gives hope. It reminds us of the others who are out there trying to navigate the same paths we find ourselves on.

I’ve got one copy to giveaway. I’ll announce the winner next Saturday. Just leave me a comment below. This book is worth the time it takes to leave that one comment.

I strongly encourage each of you to add this book to your reading list.

Tammy and Parker can also be found hanging out at their other blog, Praying For Parker.

I am the mother of 5 wonderful kids. My youngest, Parker, is a medically fragile blessing with Down's Syndrome. I am @ParkerMama on Twitter.

I have never read this book, but I would just like to point out that although Tourettes can be more difficult for some people, most of us live almost totally normal lives, we don’t consider our Tourettes harrowing or heartbreaking.

And I haven’t read Roadmap to Holland, but it is something like Welcome To Holland (http://www.our-kids.org/Archives/Holland.html)

If Roadmap to Holland the book is anything like the poem “welcome to holland” I can’t imagine it would be good. The Patterson book, too, sound wonderful and very interesting. I’m happy to have found your blog :)

Interesting to read this blog after watching the Hallmark movie last Sunday night. I rarely watch TV but saw this movie advertised about a teacher who has Tourette’s syndrome and all that he had to overcome to be successful.

Sounds like a good book to read!

I’d love to win this. I actually review books with a medical bent for a women’s health magazine site, and this sounds like a great one to feature.

I went to a counselor last week – she looked at me with big eyes and told me “You have got to read this book – you could have written a lot of it”. I am anxious to find out how much we have in common with the people in the book.
