Terror On The Tushie
It is to be expected that after a PSARP surgery there will be diaper rash.
Terrible diaper rash.
In my attempt to be optimistic (see if I ever do that again) I surmised that since none of my other kids ever had issues with diaper rash then perhaps Parker would be spared too horrid a case of Sore Bum Syndrome.
Then again maybe not.
Oh, the first few days we held out hope. We even felt a bit smug that we had perhaps beat the odds and were only going to experience a mild case of what we had heard could be such a terrifying experience.
It was nice while it lasted.
Parker's poor tush. It is red and sore and very warm to the touch.
Yesterday we logged in over 36 diaper changes.
His new designer heiny is certainly making up for lost time.
We've been washing Parker's bum with warm water, a gentle cleaner and cloth wipes. We blow dry the area on a cool setting. We're using every recipe in our arsenal.
And still the Brave Hero hurts.
So, I'm coming to beg ask for ideas.
What have you used successfully on tender tushies when covered in rashes? We were told that the best solution is simply the one that works for you.
Or, in other words, you're on your own Mom.
Take a moment and in the comment section share your tried and true solutions to a very painful problem
It would certainly help a little guy out.
As an interesting side note though, Parker has always chosen butt-hopping as his favorite form of transportation. However it now seems that hopping on a sore rear end has proven to no longer be quite as feasible.
Yup, Parker has finally decided that crawling is a pretty good idea after all.
Poor kid.

Hey Tammy,
Have you ever heard of Flanders booty cream? We use that for our kids and it worked great! Most drug stores carry it OTC.
Sorry about the painful end. Good luck!!

My son have horrible, bleeding diaper rash for months at a time. Silvadine cream worked, but was painful with open sores. The only thing that worked for us was Boudreaux's Butt Paste buy the bucket full. Our pediatrician's nurse told us to hold his bum by a bare lightbulb at each diaper change for a minute or so. Don't know why, but the combo was the only thing that worked.

Try making a paste out of oatmeal and water and putting it on his butt. That usaully works really good and no chemicals.
But then I also like the Boudreaux's Butt Paste.

tammy, I used to work for a pediatrician and we would tell moms to dry like you are doing and then put aquaphor on which can be found in any store sometimes they keep it behind the counter. but put on a thick layer of this and then the butt cream. this usually has good results

We really swore by the aquaphor. And, surprisingly, Lamisil — the foot fungus one. We'd use the anti-yeast one twice a day, and the aquaphor every other time. And sunlight or a lightbulb, as mentioned before; it will help kill off any of those nasty yeast-y things growing in little creases.
Good luck! The benefits are going to be so worth it… and he's crawling! Immediate payoff!?

I wish I could help you more! Poor guy! My kids never had bad diaper rashes. Evan has picked up yeasty diaper rashes a few time and we used nystatin and benedryl cream on his bum and it cleared it right up.

Due to her neurogenic bowel, Esther-Faith has suffered from severe rashes and fissures her whole life. On the recommendation of a nurse at Children's, we bought and used Critic-Aid. It works 95% of the time. The other 5% we use a combination of LOTS of other things.

I don't have experience with this severe of a case, but Johnson and Johnson diaper cream has always been my favorite. Our doctor also recommended coating backsides with Vasaline. The Vasaline acts as a barrier between the skin and the poop. Warm soaking baths help too, but he might not stand (sit) for that because it hurts when you first get in. I am so sorry he is hurting….

That critic aid you can get at PCMC. They also have the stuff there that they use and it works well when mixed with cornstarch.
We used the critic aid for his acid bum burns along with Resinol which you can find at Smiths drug store in an jar that looks like it hasn't been moved from the shelf in YEARS.
Our ped also said to not wipe it all off every poop if possible. Just keep adding to it. Which from 36 diapers in one day might not be an option and LOTS AND LOTS OF AIR

Tammy - I swear by Aquaphor. Hooray for the teeny tiny designer hiney! It's ALIVE!!!

Tammy, I had an intensive care nurse give me a magical concoction that worked every time for Ashley - mix together Desitin, the other diaper rash creme that is mostly vaseline (can't remember its name right now), and something like Lotrimin - an antifungal. After it is mixed up, apply liberally and then dust with powder. Ashley's butt kinda looked like chicken ready to throw in the fryer after that, but it cleared things up every single time.

The nystatin alternated with Milk of Magnesia or other stomach meds. This is also what they use on bed sores to dry them up. A heat lamp or 75/100 watt bulb whenever you can (when he sleeps) for 5 minutes at a time. At least 36-inches away. Bless his lil heart. This too shall pass. Hang in there Parker and mommy.

Can I just say the new motor thing is a BIG WOW! In the photo he is in a "bear crawling" pose - also GREAT movement for development.
You are quite the ingenious photographer - protecting Parker's privacy AND satisfying most of us mommies wanting a peek. lol!

My son used to get horrible diaper rash. When he had it really bad I would just take his diaper off and put him right into a warm bath cause he'd get diaper rashes that would bleed. We used Balmex cause the other stuff never seemed to work (after making sure his bum had time to airdry). Aquafor is a miracle cream, too. I bet that would work well in keeping stuff away from his skin. Good luck!! Poor guy, that's no fun. As a person who's had bowel surgery, it seems like they go into overdrive once they're hooked back up. I can't imagine how hard it is for a little one

CORN STARTCH!!!! Swear by it. When Anthony gets explosivebooty episodes we put some in a shaker, like we would use for cinnomon/sugar, and shake away on his booty! Its the ONLY thing that works, and we've tried everything!

We've always used Desitin and, if bad, a hair dryer first! Good Luck! His little bottom will toughen up eventually I think! But I don't know much about PSARP's…

We use cornstarch, especially when it's so raw that it is too wet for cream to stick. After smoothing on the cornstarch, which dries it up a bit, we've used Triple Paste. It's an OTC diaper cream that is actually behind the counter… you have to ask the pharmacist for it. It's pretty expensive, but we've only gone through one small tube (about $10) and half of the large tub (about $30) for two children over the past 4 years.
Another thing I've done when the rash is bad is is switch to cloth diapers. The chemicals in the disposables really mess with my kids bums… in fact, they can't even wear Pampers because they always get a rash with them, although Luvs (made by the same company) work fine. Go figure.

In the NICU, we've been using the calmoseptine mixed with some sort of baby powder (though I think at home I'd do corn starch) to a paste consistency, smeared on in a pretty thick layer. The added stickiness of the paste makes it stick through a diaper change except in the worst cases.
We also have some sort of aloe based foaming spray to clean the tush with - I can't think of the name off hand. It's helped somewhat in making sure we get everything off him before we smear him down with cream

Plain cold milk! Pour it into a bowl and soak a washcloth in it french toast style. Place the cloth inside the diaper and leave for as long as can be tolerated and repeat. I have twins and both dealt with horrendous rashes and milk was the only thing that helped!

For the pain, Mylanta on a cotton ball will take away the sting. Seriously.
For healing, there is an ointment, handmade by the pharmacists in our area called Plenders. It's a concoction they created and it is amazing stuff. You can only buy it here, and it's one we swore by when I worked in the hospital. If you want a tub of it, give me your mailing info and I'll gladly ship it out to you.

We have tried everything. Desatin just makes my kids scream. I dreaded diaper rash until I found the best thing ever - A&D cream. You find it next to the Desatin. You can even get the one with Aloe. When I put it on, my kid's faces go from tears to smiles. It is really that good. Good luck!

Poor Parker. My eldest had such hyper-sensitive skin that he would get terrible diaper rash that would pop up unexpectantly and blister so easily. Baby wipes were like fire, and so were all of the OTC diaper creams. The only thing that worked for us was Vasaline. It had to be warm when smoothed on, so there was minumal touching the tooshie. It provided a good barrier. The poor baby would sleep with his heiny in the air until the rash subsided.

Poor guy!!!
We've had a bit of bad diaper rash and the nurse at the hospital said to use the diaper rash cream made by coloplast that we were given at the hospital and not OTC stuff. It does work better, it sucks up the wetness and will stick to rashy skin.
#26 - Kei @ 12:03 pm
That's one way to get him to crawl, hmmmm?? The best stuff that worked on William was Mustela vitamin barrier cream.

I can't say this is THE best thing out there, but Burt's Bees makes a diaper cream that seems to help my little guy. Occasionally we have to use disposable diapers and then my son gets so sore his bottom starts bleeding. This seems to help it go away pretty quickly. I like that it's more natural than Desitin.
You can usually find it in the health food section of Fred Meyer or at a Walgreens type store.
Good luck Parky!

My littlest one had bad diaper rash and we were told to mix up desitin, aqua 4 and milk of magnesia (all in equal parts). It worked for him.
Good luck!

Hi Tammy, I work in a pediatric office as a nurse and we swear by the following.
Domeboro's Solution, over the counter at pharmacies, you may have to ask for it. Mix the packet in warm water and soak his tush. Air dry after that (or in case of a rush job blow dryer like you are doing). Slather with Lotrisone followed by Triple Paste twice a day. The other changes slather with Triple Paste. When cleansing his bum you don't have to get the entire layer of cream off….just enough that he is clean. If you leave a layer on at all times, he builds up a good barrier. To take the sting out: Mylanta or MOM on a cottonball and dab on. If any areas are open with a sore, put bacitracin on before any creams.
Air dry air dry air dry as much as possible. I know that is next to impossible with Parker right now, but consider putting a waterproof mattress pad on the floor, covered in an old sheet and let him read/play on it while being naked.
Hugs and prayers.

Vusion. It takes a day to clear it up, but then it's gone. Braeden would always get awful rashes and we tried all of the above. Even the calmoseptine, which actually would sting him and make it worse. The vusion is a prescription, but our ped had some samples to try before we bought it. And it smells good, too.
