Who Will YOU Jump In After?

Written by Tammy and Parker

My Dad served two tours of duty in Viet Nam. His job was enemy surveilance. He, along with a few other soldiers and a native scout, headed out in front of the rest of the squad to gather information and radio back the enemy's position and fire power.

My Dad tells the story of his first parachute jump into enemy territory. He jumped right after the scout. He says that he wasn't really scared because he was too busy trying to figure out what the liquid was that was raining up into his face.

It didn't take long after my Dad had finished his jump and ditched his chute to discover what the mystery liquid was.

One look at the huge wet zone on the flight suit of the native scout revealed the answered to the riddle. It seemed that the scout hadn't just been scared. He had been really scared. So scared that he emptied his bladder on his way down after he jumped.

The liquid that drenched my Dad square in the face was the contents of the scouts bladder.

Now you may wonder why I'm sharing this story on 5 Minutes For Special Needs. Let me see if I can connect the dots for you:

When I think of my Dad's military service, I think of the price that has been paid for our many freedoms.

When I think of our freedoms I think of voting. To me voting is a way to show respect for those who have served in defense of our country.

But I have yet to decide who to vote for this election.

I worry about jumping in after someone just to wind up with a face full of….well, you get my drift.

Healthcare is a biggie for me, so I was interested when a friend shared this link with me:

2008 Presidential Candidate Positions on Disability-related Issues

Totally non-partisian. Pinky swear.

But I would be interested in knowing who has the best plan to help us keep Parker alive. Whadda YOU think?

Wow, talk about an over the river and through the woods way to share a link, eh?

What a wonderful post Tammy, I feel the same as you about those serving. My grandpa served and I thank him so much as well as everyone else who has or will. I think I know who I am voting for. I just hope I made the right choice!!

Much Love and thank you so much for sharing this important info with us!

Thanks Tammy for sharing the link and the info. My newest daughter is mentally ill and mental health care is barely covered by most health insurance plans right now. We are keenly interested in a candidate who is aware that one out of four Americans will need mental health care at some point in their lives. How did this become a commercial?

Excellent post! Thanks!

This was fascinating. Thank you for passing it along.

Um, um, um, what did all that mean? Seriously, I read through the whole page and I can't really tell what would actually happen! Ugh!

At the risk of being slammed, I'll go ahead and be brave and tell you who I'm jumping in after….that would be McCain! I am an Army wife who has children with special needs. I know first hand what living under a health care plan like Obama proposes for our entire nation is like…it's like military health insurance. If you are perfectly averge with just minor health needs, then it's great…free medicine all around…whoo-hoo. However, it is HORRIBLE for our children. It sounds great on paper, but that's as far as it goes. My children receive excellent medical care because I fight to get them in with doctors outside of this system. And, I am not alone. When you make things equal across the board, you decrease the QUALITY of health care for our children. For the sake of all of our children, I pray that Obama's health care plan is never put into action.

I have to say that if our country would move toward universal healthcare, socialized medicine, whatever you want to call it, our special needs children will get the short end of the stick. Once specialized care starts to be rationed, and it will because demand will exceed supply, a system will be set up to determine who qualifies for certain services, treatments or therapies. Sick and/or disabled persons may find themselves a lower priority.

I agree voting is one of the best ways we can pay our respect to our servicemen. They are fighting for democracy; the least we can do it make sure we take part in the democratic process–regardless of who we vote for.

To help answer your question, i will pose you another one to you.

How happy are you with your current healthcare plan/options?

Start there, ask yourself what you would like to see changed and then figure out which candidate will give you the change you need.

Personally, I think Obama will do the most for those with disabilities as his plan, and McCain's lack of one, demonstrate.

In terms of healthcare, Obama is NOT pushing for a universal healthcare system. He is not looking for socialized medicine. He made it perfectly clear that those who currently have insurance will keep their insurance.

What Obama does guarantee is that ALL children will have insurance, and that affordable insurance will be available to those people who have no insurance. He wants to make sure everyone is insured.

McCain will give you $5000 to get your own insurance. After that, you are on your own.

Obama is willing to put federal dollars into programs that will help the disabled both as children and as adults. McCain–not as much. Not from lack of caring, just because he is all about less government.

Sometimes we need government to be more involved to bring about the change. Sometimes positive change costs money. What's that quote? "Taxes are the price we pay for civilization"

I don't mind paying a little higher taxes if I know they will go into programs that will not only help keep our Brave Hero alive, but will also help give him more opportunities once he is grown.

I think Christine put it very well. I don't think McCain's plan is good: McCain will give $5000 to purchase insurance but then tax the insurance your employer gives you. With Obama, you keep the insurance you have. I don't have any experience with insurance for special needs children, but I do hope the next President can help Parker more than the current President. I too would be happy to see my tax dollars to go to Parker and his vent!

Obama is requiring insurance for all children which I think is a great thing because there are many children in U.S that do not have insurance and therfore don't go to the dr. I do not like Mccain plan with tax credit and then taxing it. Also with his plan insurance companies could refuse to take someone if they have a pre existing condition. Obama requires insurance's to take every child regardless of previous conditions.

When I said in my comment "how did this become a commercial, I was referring to my own comments…about health insurance not covering care for mental health issues. Sorry for any confusion. I enjoyed this post and linked to it on my blog.
