A Sensory Delight ~ Special Exposure Wednesday
Welcome to Special Exposure Wednesday, where you have an open invitation to join the weekly photo sharing fun.
Sunday we attended an arts festival which included demonstrations from a variety of artists and many hands-on activities. Wil's favorite experience was throwing a pot. It was a sensory delight for my child who loves to experience the world through touch, and I snapped this photo as the potter worked with him.
Wil has a very heavy-handed touch due to cerebral palsy, and I was anxious to see how this woman would deal with it. She was magical. She was relaxed, engaged him completely and gently guided his hands as together, they worked the clay.
I get the warm fuzzies when moments like these unfold happily for my child…don't you?

What a sweet woman to help Wil through this activity. I think Myah would LOVE something like this! Thanks Melody

Love the shot, such texture and motion! That's so awesome, and talk about sensory.
Rickismom @ 1:07 am
tremendous shot! the motion is capturede so well! And yes, it IS nice when others "catch on" and are truely in tune with our child's needs….
Jenny @ 1:17 am
Great shot! I'm glad Wil was able to enjoy such a wonderful experience!

I'm amazed at some of the people who work with our special needs kids. They seem to have an endless amount of compassion, patience, and love.
Debbie Yost @ 7:22 am
That's a photo you think of when you go to an art gallery. However, I'd say the experience for Wil was probaly better than the shot. What a great way to rememeber it by.
Karen @ 7:47 am
Ahhhh! This is an amazing photo — speaks so much.
Danette @ 8:16 am
What a great way to capture the memory! I kwym, it means all the world when someone has the patience to take that extra time and show some kindness. Awesome!
Maddy @ 9:38 am
She must be good [the potter]. I also throw pots but I've only ever used the wheel with my daughter. With my sons one can't stand the sound / noise and the other can't stand being 'dirty.'
Other than that, I'd say yes, best therapy there is!
Best wishes
Michelle and Elliot @ 10:08 am
That's just wonderful! What a magical moment and perfect photo!

My Ashley would love to do that! Being deafblind means most of her sensory input in through her hands. I must find a place like that to take her.
Rachelle @ 12:41 pm
What a beautiful picture. I bet that felt wonderful on his hands.
killlashandra @ 1:43 pm
Wonderful picture! Using all the senses is so important and feeling the texture of wet clay and then shaping it into something must have been a great experience. I've heard that when you touch something with a unique texture you're more likely to remember something associated with the feel.
Melody @ 3:10 pm
I adore each of you and your sweet comments.
BTW Lee, my 13 yo also with sensory issues, was gagging and almost threw up at the thought of simply touching the clay.
Mac, also w/sensory issues, loved it while working the clay, but nearly freaked before he could clean his hands afterward.
Wil would have immersed himself in the clay.
Yeah, we are a diverse crew.
Sandi @ Life with Jessica @ 4:32 pm
Beautiful photo, and a beautiful story behind it. It is such a wonderful feeling when somebody connects with our kids
