A *special* Special Exposure Wednesday.

mal122web

In February, Mal rushed up to me with a Big W catalogue in his arms.

He rustled through the pages until his hand came to rest on a picture.

It was of an inflatable boat.

“See this, Aunty Tiff, see,” he gestured.

“This ‘scout boat’  - I want it for my birthday”.

Today Mal turned 12

and even though we live over an hour away from any body of water

and we have nowhere to keep it

Mal is the proud owner of a scout boat.

Why, you may ask.

Well, because last year, Mal had no idea about birthdays or birthday wishes or what he wanted for his birthday

but

this year

Mal chose the boat.

The ugly, inflatable boat and he never wavered.

Not once.

Through all of February and March he rabbited on and on about the scout boat

and

he had plans for how he was going to spend the day.

He would wake up

have his obligatory pancakes and ice cream (reserved only for birthday days)

open his presents

and then we would take the scout boat to the “lake near Gran’s”

and we would have a birthday picnic.

He would float in his dingy all day

and then we would come home for a dinner of

“Biggest Loser Pizza”.

It’s exactly what we did.

We celebrated Mal

and his 12 years on earth

and the fact that he made plans

and made a wish.

Happy Birthday, smiley boy.

Hope all your wishes come true.

Always.

Bringing up seven kids has led to in depth knowledge of asthma, autism, fetal alcohol syndrome and drug induced developmental delay, immune deficiency and autoimmune disease, ectodermal dysplasia, neonatal death and cardiac defect. Despite all of that, I didn't know I was about to start the ride of my life with the illness of my youngest daughter, Ivy.

Your post made me cry — because we went through something similar with our son. Happy Birthday, big guy! And happy sailing!
