Special Edition This Just In: Sarah Palin
Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska has been selected as John McCain’s choice for Vice Presidential nominee of the Republican Party. Governor Sarah Palin recently gave birth to her son who has Down syndrome. The Palins knew before their son’s birth that he would have Down syndrome.
Sarah and Todd Palin have five children: boys Track, 19, and Trig, 4 months, and daughters Bristol, 17, Willow, 13, and Piper, 7. Track Palin joined the Army last September and will deploy to Iraq on Sept. 11. Palin gave birth to Trig, who has Down syndrome, in April and returned to work three days later.
The positive publicity this announcement brings is, regardless of your political views, a leap in the right direction for families of children with special needs, and especially those with Down syndrome.
Watching Trig grow up as the son of the Vice President of America (or simply as the son of a VP nominee) will be proof positive that a child with Down syndrome didn't ruin this Mom's life or serve as the end to her dreams.
From what I have read, Governor Palin comes across as sharp, resourceful, and not afraid to take on the 'big boys.'
Reminds me of quite a few other Mom's of special needs kids I know.
But that is simply my opinion. Yours may differ.
Please feel welcome to share your thoughts in the comments section below.

I agree that at first glance the nomination seems like a good thing, but I need to know more – what is her stand on disability issues in general? How has she voted on such issues? What has she done to support people with disabilities? What are her committments to education for children with disabilities? It's bigger to me than just her loving her own son…
Heidi @ 9:16 am
I maintain that I have equal disdain for both political parties, but I have to say I was a bit excited when I heard that she has a baby with a syndrome and knew before she gave birth.
I hope that the conversations going along with this campaign will help people people understand more about disabilities.

Thank you, Tammy, for providing this post. No one needs to worry about the politics as you said nothing about whether to vote for her or her party. The significance of her decision to give birth to her child does have implications for all parents of children with special needs.

I was pretty excited to hear the news too, and I haven't been excited about much in this campaign so far
.
I first heard about her a few months ago when her baby was born, hopefully having her in the race will help bring awareness to Down syndrome and disabilities in general.

I was wondering how you feel about Sarah Palin leaving her four month old son to campaign for national office. Don't you think she should devote herself 100% to Trig and her other children?
Stephanie @ 7:20 pm
Sarah Palin is one tough cookie! I'm excited about her candidacy. I understand that her husband is covering the home front. Isn't that sweet? I think a smart energetic career woman can be a devoted mother, especially with that kind of support.

Thanks for posting this, Tammy. If anything, it will bring Ds to the forefront, and for that, I am very pleased. And personally, I think that Sarah is simply splendid!

Barbara: You are right. I haven't even decided who will get my vote yet. I have some researching to do.
Ellen: To really be honest, I'm more taken aback at the number of people I've read expressing the same concern as you do.
I know some in the Ds community feel that she should be devoting herself to Trig and his needs.
From what I have read, Palin's kids will be well taken care of as her husband is going to be supporting her at home.
And I don't see Palin as one to abandon her kids. I see her as one to put them as a priority.
There are many, many stay at home Moms, that even though they stay at home, give their kids far less one on one time than working Moms I know.
But for the record, I am a SAHM. I have degrees in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I have worked at home all through out my marriage.
With Parker's birth I had to put everything on the back burner, including shutting down a very successful work at home business, as his health is fragile to say the least. Very fragile.
I am now getting my feet slowly back into the work at home world as Parker's medical bills are outrageous.
But I am not one to say that Sarah Palin should not take this opportunity because she has children at home. I totally support her.

Amanda,
While I appreciate you taking the time to comment, I felt that choosing not to spread the rumor was important. Some of the links from your link lead to some very rough accusations towards Bristol.
As of right now that is simply a rumor. And even if by some chance it isn't, it still winds up hurting two children.
I hope you understand.
If it does prove true, I promise to update my original post.
Deal?

When Sarah Palin's name came up I really had to start reading about her and getting information on what she represents. Initially I was more than excited because here is a woman who is a working mother of 5, the parent of a special needs child, this woman is going to GET the issues closest to home.
But then, as I really considered some of her choices, both politically and personally, I worry about her being the one to represent "us", the moms. I have serious issues with her being a forthright and honest candidate, I do have a lot of the "can you keep your own home" debate going on in my head right now.
It will be interesting, for sure.

The speculation on Palin about whether or not she can be a good mother AND VP REALLY bothers me. And that's all it is, speculation.
Who are we to judge her? I'm not surprised that we are all debating this though because women and mothers in particular are so hard on each other. We are a diverse group and what works for one mom may not for another. Some women are more nurturing than others and I don't think every mother that has a special needs child should quit her job. Every family needs to do what is best for their family and in some families that means the mother is the primary breadwinner or she simply loves her job and figures out a way to balance both or she works out of necessity. I personally believe stay at home dads can do just as good of a job as a SAHM. I know several and in a couple of them the mother just isn't all that maternal. Does that mean "maternal" mothers are better? Absolutely not.
I hope in my lifetime I will see mothers become more accepting of each other.
I'll get off my soapbox with my favorite quote from Gloria Vanderbilt:
"I've always believed that one woman's success can only help another woman's success."

I cannot even remember how I found your blog, but I have grown to love Parker, and I pray for him every day. I am awed by your love and devotion to him. I am totally aware of your credentials as a teacher (I am also a teacher), and I realize how fortunate Parker is to have been given to you. I feel strongly that Trig Palin deserves the same attention from his mother, and for that reason, I will not support her in her bid for the vice presidency! She should be there 24/7 as you are for Parker.

I was so moved by Sarah Palin's speech the other night I decided I needed to DO something to support her!
I just opened a new store for Moms of Special needs children who are for Sarah Palin. I'd love for you to visit!
http://www.cafepress.com/momsforpalin
I have an 8 year old son with autism (or AWEtism is my word for it!) I love the idea that someone in Washington will be in our corner!
Hope you enjoy the store.

I am a stay at home mom and i feel like sarah palin needs to quit worrying so much about career and get back to her children i dont have a special needs child but i have friend that does and she has to work there is no other choice for her palin on the other hand has a choice and she should be with not just that baby but the rest of the kids as well!I feel God gave women the ability to give birth for a reason and even though her husband is a good dad he can not replace her absence as a mom she needs to get her priorities straight.
