Do you take good care of your health?

I am still shocked and saddened by the news that Anissa Mayhew, one of the writers here, suffered a stroke. I’ve been sending thoughts and prayers her way.

It’s gotten me thinking about my own health, I have to say. I spend so much time caring for Max (who had a stroke at birth) that I have little energy or will left to take care of myself. I have a feeling I am far from the only mom of a kid with special needs like this.

Thing is,  I need to be around to take care of Max for a long, long time. And I am not the healthiest right now. I need to lose weight, I don’t get my vitamins, my cholesterol level is damn scary.

So today, I am thinking about Anissa, and I hope she will someday know that she’s inspired this mom to care for herself a little more.

This has been on my heart lately. I try to remind friends not to get so caught up in therapies and med stuff that they don’t take care of themselves :(

Oh my, I had missed the news about Anissa. My prayers are with her and her family.

This post is timely to me as well. My son is 6 years old. I haven’t been to the doctor in 5 years. It’s always been put on the back burner.

In the past year I have made an effort to take better care of myself. I’ve started taking my vitamins, watching what I eat, and going to the chiropractor.

But today, I had to go because of a little rash on my arm. That turned out to be shingles. What on earth!?

I plan on getting to the doctor more regularly so I can really stay on top of my own health. Because as one of my very wise friends has said to me for the years Max has been in my life, “You have to put the oxygen mask on yourself first, before you help the child”.

I’m only now starting to take better care of myself. Part of it is age. I HAVE to pay attention now. My body at 42 requires a lot more upkeep than it did at 32. I’ve also been completely focused on Queen Teen and her needs, so I ignored my own body, until it started demanding a little attention. Now I get regular accupuncture treatments to balance out the damage caused from too much stress. I work out, eat better, and make sure I get some sanity breaks. I too realized I need to stick around for my girl for a long time.

You motivated me to make challenge myself this next year – I am going to run in a race once a month. Thanks for the wake-up call!
