Photographing Children [with Special Needs]
You are a parent with an adorable kid [kids] and a digital camera in your hands. You are capturing every waking, and often sleeping, moment possible…yet the images captured are not exactly as envisioned at the moment of click.
If you are the parent of a child [children] with special needs, you understand there are sometimes factors beyond the norm which make photo sessions, whether candid or planned, even more challenging.
Any heads nodding yes?
Honestly, when photographing any child the majority of considerations are the same regardless of whether or not special needs are involved. Still, there are issues specific to photographing children with special needs.
Some of you may recall that I began this blog column several months ago. Life events conspired to halt the photography column.
I now have everything under control. You see the humor in that statement, right?
Each Tuesday there will be a post about photographing children and, when warranted, information particular to children with special needs. The column will be informational, creative and interactive…that means you must be actively involved for it to succeed.
The plan is to include:
- informational posts about photography basics
- creative shooting ideas and techniques
- artistic, fun assignments
- photographers as guest bloggers
- questions and suggestions from you
- sharing our photos [we'll have a flickr group]
- and, of course, a bent toward special needs children
All parents [and others] with the goal of learning to better photograph children are invited to participate.
The weekly column begins May 26.
What do you think?
What photography questions or topic suggestions do you have?

What about special education teachers who moonlight as portrait photographers and love to take pictures of their students?
Can I participate?

We can't go to Sears anymore so I'm looking forward to this. Thank you

Nicole, absolutely welcome!

Territory Mom ~
Trust me. You can take much better photos of your children than Sears. Really.

Yeah this is exciting. I take tons of pictures, good, bad and really really bad with an occasional great one. I am thankful for digital cameras because by now I would be living on the streets after developing so many pictures of what was suppose to be our memories instead of blurs and missed shots!
I even like to take those unexpected pictures, such as temper tantrums being thrown, extremely messy and.or runny nosed, food slathered children, etc… of course I don't always share those with others but I keep them for back up so I can show my children the things I had to put up with
I have to ask will the simple minded mom with a point & shoot camera be able to understand and follow along? Also will this simple minded mom be able to graduate to the type of camera and photography that gives one a little more flexibility, options and possibly allow one ont to rely on a portrait studio!

I LOVE this idea. My best case scenario is having someone go through life with me teaching me how to use my camera. Of course I could only stand to have that person there for the first 2 hours, so realistically it wouldn't work.
I'd love to have some pointers on distance shots. For instance, my son is in a volleyball tournament. I cannot go park on the ref's stand to get the shots I want. and then there is flash…. no flash goes that distance so what do I do?
I have a digital camera with autofocus. I can also adjust f-stops but I have no idea how to do any of that stuff.

My specific question in photographing my child is that she doesn't make eye contact or respond to her name, so getting a picture where I can see her beautiful eyes is very difficult! Any suggestions?

What a great fabulous and very good idea for a column here!! Can you tell I'm excited?
I have not had my baby's photo taken by a professional because I don't trust them to know what to do with him. His arm differences and general developmental delay make the "traditional" poses difficult. I would really love some tips on how to do some poses like this at home. Like I said, I just haven't found a photographer I would trust at this time.
Thanks so much!

I'm a bit late today, but that sounds great to me! I'm a bit of a point and click at the blur kind of a happy snapper :0
Cheers

I love taking photos, candid and posed, of my children. They've gotten so used to the camera that they're now helping compose shots. I look forward to this column!

I stopped taking my son to any photo studios because the pictures turned out so crummy and they just didn't have the patience with him. Since photography is becoming a new hobby of mine, I set up my own little "photo shoots" for my son using blankets or sheets as backdrops. I did the ones for our Christmas card and honestly think they are almost just as good as a studio portrait.
I'm looking forward to this column and learning/hearing about others expereinces!
Sandi @ Life with Jessica @ 9:06 am
Looking forward to it Melody!! I can definitely use some guidance…for every good shot I get of Jess, I have at least 20 bad ones (top or side of her head, arms in front of her face, looking up her nose, complete blur, not even in the shot, LOL!)
TUC @ 10:57 pm
I love taking pictures but unfortunately I stink at it! What I wouldn't give to be able to capture my daughter's beautiful essence on digital "film". I'm looking forward to this column.
