“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.”

One of the most satisfactory things about my own childhood was that my mother always had time for me.
She was never too busy. Never in so much of a rush that she couldn’t slow down to let me experience something new. And she always understood the joy contained within the childhood mantra, “I can do it myself!”
So this week when I had a cake decorating project and my daughter sat watching wide-eyed and suddenly sighed, “Oh, I wish I could decorate a cake too!” Well, how could I say no?
I happened to be working with fondant and showed her how to roll it out to drape it or shape it like play dough. We pulled a gluten-free cupcake out of the freezer and she was soon humming happily as she slathered on chocolate icing, and sprinkles.
I grinned when she announced that she was going to make a “Cars” cupcake for her little brother. She pulled a miniature die-cast Sally out of the toy box to use as a model and came up with the adorable likeness above all on her own.
For the price of a few minutes spent scavenging through cupboards for rainbow sprinkles, I was rewarded with a fun-filled afternoon with a very entertaining companion as I completed my own cake-decorating tasks.
I hope with all my heart that she grows up with memories that rival the wonders of my own childhood…
And Mom? Thanks for taking the time to show me the joys of chocolate frosting, rainbow sprinkles and an “I can do it myself!” childhood.
Love you, you know.

The two of you sure make for enjoyable (vicarious) cake decorating!
Ooo my! Cake decorating. My favourite after pottery and every bit as messy around here. You mum sounds like an absolute gem and a timely reminder to us all to take a deep breath, drop what we’re doing and take time to smell the roses.
Of course you need to be careful when you pause and drop everything otherwise you might just drop the pot on your newly decorated cake!
Cheers
That’s beautiful! And it is wonderful that her first thought was to make one for her brother!
That’s a beautiful car she made for her brother!
What a wonderful daughter you have. And what a great mom you are.

That is wonderful! I’m glad your mom always had time for you…and that you’re passing on that priceless gift to your own daughter. Her cupcake is great, by the way, and how NICE that she made that for her brother!!!! =)
What an awesome job – I love her cupcake! She is blessed to have you for a mom.
That is FANTASTIC! What a great job she did and well done on you allowing her to learn through food (one of my favorite ways to teach!)
