Can't Beat the Leprechauns, Join Them
Since my sons were preschool-age leprechauns have made a yearly romp through our home.
Every St. Patrick's Day morning the boys awaken to overturned furniture, strewn toys, hidden mint candies, shamrock confetti tossed about and green pee in the toilets…complete with wee green footprints on the toilet seats…evidence of the leprechaun's play time.
Until last year.
The year before on the night of March 16, 2007, the boys did not sleep…at all…not one wink…all night long…in anticipation of the leprechauns' arrival. They were wired to the hilt. I was exhausted to the max. Time to stop the charade…cause I'm a mean mother who needs sleep.
So last year I broke the news…
Lee being older no longer believed in the Leprechauns anyway. Wil being very logical was easy to convince that mom was the leprechauns. Mac, well, let's just say he was a different story.
Living with Asperger's Syndrome, Mac is not easily swayed from his beliefs. Telling him the truth did not deter his party-all-night, set leprechaun traps and wait for them mode…not one bit. He refused to accept the fact that leprechauns weren't real. And just for fun his brothers..who,you'll remember, no longer believed in leprechauns..stayed up all night with him.
I stood firm. The leprechauns didn't come and on the morning of March 17, 2008, Mac was devastated…really…to the point of tears. I felt like a heel.
The story stops here because it's getting late as I type this on St. Patrick's Day eveā¦gotta go spread a bit of leprechaun mischief.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!

This is new to me. Very funny and cute. Like Halloween traditions. Hope you got some sleep last night.

Sorry Mel, but this one had me laughing!
With you, not at you — I promise!
I had to throw together festivities for the day as well, even though she knows that leprechauns are make-believe. Just like with Santa and the tooth fairy. I was informed that if I did not play along, I would be guilty of being a "fuddy duddy". Moreover, I would be in danger of getting "reely old reely fast jess like Wendy in Peter Pan (we just finished reading it) if I didn't shape up and remember how to play pretend with her.
So I shaped up and decorated the house forthwith.
Mac's leprechaun traps are the absolute best, and I have a hunch you didn't really want to miss out on them anyway
Happy St. Paddy's from my little leprechauns to yours — I must go prepare a "leprechaun feast WITH PIE" now

Man, you're such a cool mom! Green salmon patties for dinner and green shirts were the extent of the celebration here. Next year I'll do better!
